Five Species, Infinite Fire
Bell peppers and ghost peppers belong to the same genus. The habanero and scotch bonnet are the same species. All the world's chili diversity comes from just five domesticated Capsicum species out of roughly 35 wild ones.
Capsicum annuum is the workhorse: bells, jalapenos, serranos, cayennes, Thai chilies โ zero to 100,000 Scoville. Capsicum chinense (misnamed โ it's from the Americas, not China) holds the hottest: habaneros, ghost peppers, Carolina Reaper. Frutescens gives us tabasco and piri piri. Baccatum covers South American aji peppers. Pubescens, the only frost-tolerant species, produces the thick-walled rocoto.
Capsaicin evolved to deter mammals while letting birds โ immune to the burn โ spread the seeds. 70 peppers on a surprisingly tight family tree.
Did you know?
- *Bell peppers and ghost peppers are the same genus, and the habanero and scotch bonnet belong to the same species, Capsicum chinense.
- *Capsaicin evolved as a defense against mammals; birds cannot feel the burn and serve as the pepper plant's intended seed dispersers.
- *Capsicum chinense is not from China; the name was a botanical mistake by a Dutch physician who misidentified the species' origin in 1776.
- *The Carolina Reaper, currently among the hottest peppers on record, was bred by crossing a Pakistani Naga pepper with a red habanero.
- *Capsicum pubescens, the species behind rocoto peppers, is the only domesticated pepper that can tolerate frost and has distinctive black seeds.
What is GuessKin?
GuessKin is a free daily guessing game built on real-world taxonomy. Choose from over 20 categories and try to identify the mystery pepper. Each guess reveals how closely related your answer is to the target through a shared classification tree.
How does it work?
Every pepper in GuessKin sits on a taxonomy tree โ a branching hierarchy that shows how things are classified and related. When you make a guess, the game shows you the nearest common ancestor between your guess and the answer. The closer that ancestor is to the answer, the warmer you are. The tree visualization grows with each guess, narrowing down where the answer lives and helping you triangulate.
How to get the best score
- โขFewer guesses is better. The ideal game is guessing it in 1. Every guess counts against your score.
- โขSpeed matters too. The timer starts on your first guess. Quick, confident answers are rewarded.
- โขRead the tree. Each guess gives you real taxonomic information. Pay attention to which branch the answer is on and which branches you've already ruled out.
- โขStart broad, then narrow. Your first guess splits the tree. Pick something that gives you maximum information, then drill into the revealed branch.
Each GuessKin category uses a real classification system. These aren't made-up groupings โ they're the same systems scientists and specialists actually use. New categories are added regularly. Every category is free, with no accounts and no ads.
